Step Outside Your Circle
How seeking new experiences and networks can accelerate your career growth
The most transformative career experiences often come from stepping outside your usual circle.
Whether it’s a fellowship, a professional conference, a site visit to an innovative company, or joining a new professional group, these experiences often spark perspective shifts, new relationships, and unexpected opportunities.
For example, as a Council on Foreign Relations Term Member, I had the chance to visit organizations like Anthropic and learn how they run their research lab to understand how AI makes decisions. That exposure to new ideas and diverse perspectives helped me broaden my thinking, approach challenges differently, and build relationships that continue to influence my work.
There are many ways to create your own version of this kind of experience. The key is to be intentional about seeking opportunities that stretch your thinking and expand your network. Sometimes the best career moves are not just about switching roles, they’re about surrounding yourself with people and ideas that push you to grow.
Seek out conferences, professional networks, and local events that push you out of your comfort zone. Come ready to ask questions, listen actively, and make connections that expand your perspective.
As a side note, if you are between ages 30 and 36 and interested in the CFR Term Member Program, applications are now open!
